Here at Sabersmith, we build our swords and daggers out of 1075 High Carbon Steel. This steel is ideal for building swords due to its flexibility when heat treated correctly. Any real sword will be built out of some form of High Carbon Steel, which you will then need to maintain to prevent rust. We regularly coat our blades with a penetrating oil to protect them from rust and to clean off the blade.
Blade Rust sword care
There are different brands of oil available to choose from, our favorite being PB Blaster Penetrating Oil, which can be purchased at any local hardware or auto parts store. Other commonly used oils are Liquid Wrench brand, REM Oil, or CLP, any brand of gun oil works, as well. All metal parts should be oiled and wiped down on a regular basis, every few weeks or every month. This could be more often, depending on how humid the environment you keep your blade in is.
Blades should not be stored inside leather sheaths for extended periods of time as leather will speed the formation of rust. Many of our blades come with a wooden scabbard instead of leather. It is fine to store the blade in wood as long as it is regularly removed and oiled.
There are multiple methods to clean off rust that has formed on a blade. (Remember that using an abrasive on a custom finish blade may remove that finish.) We primarily use two products to clean our blades; Scotch Brite Pads and Sand Flex Polishing Blocks. Both of these are available online from retailers such as Amazon. However, you can also find the Scotch Brite Pads in the cleaning section of most stores like Walmart.
If rust has formed, lay your sword down on a flat surface and carefully scrub the section following the visible grain of the steel. Be very careful and stay aware of the edge of the blade as our blades are quite sharp. Relatively new, shallow rust can usually be easily removed through this method of cleaning. If the steel has been allowed to remain rusty and pitting has occurred, you may need to have it professionally cleaned. We offer this service for a small fee, as do professional blade sharpeners and blacksmith shops.
Tempered Blades sword care
We offer multiple blade finishes beyond the natural satin finish; such as gold or blue tempered finishes, and acid etched or black oxide. These finishes are just for aesthetics, it will wear overtime. Be carful using it to cut most fruits and vegetables as the acid will take off the finish. The swords also still need to be oiled and cleaned on a regular basis. If you allow rust to form on a custom finish blade, removing the rust may also remove the finish. We can not repair or re-apply these finishes. If you have trouble keeping other blades in your collection free of rust, we suggest sticking with satin finish options, as they clean easiest.
